Old is Gold?

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 | Tech news

I sometimes wonder the old saying : old is gold is quite valuable. It applies to some extent in web 2.0 also. There have been several things on net which we feel that older version was the best.

Now take for e.g, Windows Vista. The holy graphic shit with a bit of security loopholes and major problems of not supporting many softwares. Like for e.g vista doesn’t support Tally 7.2 (is that the latest version?). Also there are many softwares that run in XP but not in vista because the time period of windows XP was such that major softwares, applications and games came during that period and so they were in support of it. It was like web 2.0 just evolved around and they got stick to XP. And i suppose Microsoft too faced many problems with Vista release. Had it been Linux era, than it wouldn’t have been any problem for anyone because it isn’t like Windows that would come out every year with something new. To tell you the truth, Microsoft comes out with more and more better system requirement applications and Intel comes out with better processors ultimately creating a business where we stupid people keep on changing machines every 2-3 years so that we aren’t outdated. I recently got my Compaq presario laptop and i got myself Windows XP instead if Vista.

Also if you see new version of Google talk, it doesn’t have ‘calling’ feature in it. Microsoft came up with IE 8, a copycat of Mozilla FireFox. Didn’t other browsers copy tabular browsing from FireFox ? Another example is New yahoo mail. Its no better. I still use old version of yahoo mail because its fine for me. People signed up for yahoo and liked yahoo mail seeing what it was at that time. The new yaho0 mail is totally crap. We need our work to be done rather than fancy the graphics of new yahoo inbox. What new feature did yahoo mail got ? one-click instead of double-click? Are they fooling around us ? Features is something which can minimize work load in correct way instead of creating fancy things. Like for e.g New Firefox 3 beta 5. Its got something useful, time saving speed. While IE 8 came just because it didn’t want to become outdated in browser market.

[...] Old is gold. Google says that their gmail team is continuously working to make gmail more faster and better experience in online mail system. You can see the new gmail features here . I would actually love to see gmail getting faster and simpler instead of fancier. ZDnet tech blog says that google may make gmail more of a kind of platform for useless extensions and plug-ins and features instead of simple mail system. Quite true. [...]
