4 decades of laptop
Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 | Tech news | No Comments
The ideas for portability in PC’s all started in 1968. It has taken 4 decades for us to reach here where we are today where you can get slim and ultra portable and exciting featured laptops. Developments in notebook has gone a long way, especially i suppose much development has taken in past 1 decade with developments in nanotechnology and other branches. Former Xerox PARC computer scientist Kay first had the vision in 1968 of developing what he termed ‘Dynabook’, something like portable PC’s. But what went was known as notebooks and laptops instead of ‘dynabook’. Well, that doesn’t matter because what we wanted was laptops, oops ‘dynabook’..whatever ! Every development starts with ideas and this was one of them.

Thursday, September 25th, 2008 | Laptop reviews | 1 Comment
In Vaio, CS Series is the one that comes in lower price range. There are 5 models in it, CS 12,14,15,17,18 with increasing price respectively. Major differnece in them is Processor GHz and RAM.
Configuration - Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2.2 Ghz. 160 to 320 GB ATA HDD. 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM. Only model CS 17 and 18 have both dedicated 128 MB Graphics card memory. Mobile Intel Graphiocs accelerator. DVD Writer/Player. All have built in Bluetooth feature and built in webcam 1280 X 1024 effective pixels.
Battery Life is less than 3 hours. So bad battery life. TZ series have excellent battery life, as long as 10 hours.
OS - Windows Vista.
Price - There is about similar difference in price between consecutive models.
CS 13 - Rs. 45000
CS 14 - Rs. 50000
CS 15 - Rs. 55000
CS 17 - Rs. 60000
CS 18 - Rs. 70000
CS 17 model has some good colour options available apart from Aroma black like Jet blue, Clear white, Red and Pink also. They look great.
The Vaio CS series is best for budget buy in sony brand. Of course, i can recommend you another brand cheaper than sony a lot and still excellent features at much lower price. This series seems to be designed especially for indian market where people prefer cheaper laptops with better specs. Sony has tried to keep unwanted extras as minimum as possible and this can be best for light home use and not hardcore gaming or such.

Targeting Indian Market in Laptops
Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 | Tech news | No Comments
Every country has its own market, meaning its own way of operating. You cant sell a product the same was in US as in India and vice-versa. Indian market is diverse and understanding the core of it is very much important. I would be saying a few words about ow to target Indian markets in terms of selling PC’s and laptops.
Pricing - Keeping pricing low by reducing as much useless specs as possible. Indian people are middle class and below average type so they need laptops in range of $600-700. PC’s sell at $500. Very few people buy laptops priced above $1500. This is Indian market, not US market which can afford it.
Specs - Very few understand TFT screen or even Blu-Ray or your DVD writer speed is 8X or 16X (The only thing matters is presence of DVD writer). Webcam is 1.3 or 2.0 inbuilt, very few people are conscious about that. Also first time buyers don’t know much about battery life, so it’s hardly in notice whether 2 hours or 4 hours battery life. Plus you have 3 USB 2.0 slots or 4 USB 2.0 slots, no one much pays attention.
Brand - Branding is something people in India get attracted. I never understand why people buy lenovo for no reason when you can get better model with better price and with better configuration. Maybe because lenovo ads show some creativity of Saif ali Khan while Compaq shows Shah Rukh khan. WTF you gonna do with face recognition. Just boost about it. But people still buy it. They don’t care HP or Compaq or Dell, but they care lenovo is a known brand and has an amazing but useless feature of face recognition.
You have Altec Lansing speakers or some ordinary ones, people don;t expect much sound quality from laptops. Another thing is customer service. Most first time users are unaware how much important is after service in laptops. Sony and Dell rock at it while HP sucks (None of their 10 phone nos. work or are received by a human being). No one cares your laptop body is more solid that that one. But yes, people love colours of Dell more than their configuration. Indian people like showing off their vibrant colours. If any company gives something extra, people like that.
Most people don’t apply good brains while calculating and comparing prices and configuration between 2 models or 2 brands. Most people just look at the fact that they have this much budget and hence go for this one. There are several such small things in laptops which people don’t look minutely while buying kor they complain later until genuine reason as they have the habit of let-go unlike americans and UK’s. This is India. The above lecture was with respect to non-geeks and common people. So don’t think the way geeks or webmasters think.
Sony Vaio VGN-FW13GU
Thursday, September 11th, 2008 | Laptop reviews | No Comments
Sony Vaio is the only brand in india which sells one of the costliest laptops. Sony released a new model VGN-FW13GU/H. Price is Rs. 1,25,000 ($ 2730).
Configuration : Windows Vista OS, Intel Core 2Duo 2.53 GHz, 4 GB DDR2 SDRAM, Blu-Ray Drive + writer, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 256 MB dedicated graphics card, 320 GB ATA HDD. Display is TFT 16.4 ” wide WXGA 1600×900 with LCD view type.
Battery life is not much. Just 2 hours. But i suppose its obvious with such high configuration but still it should have been about 4 hours. Weights about 3 Kg. Blu-Ray disc is one such unique feature in Sony laptops. Although quite costly, they always have high configuration an best of features in laptops apart from sexy and trendy look.

Netbook is something creating silent buzz. HP has unveiled a new 10 inch netbook which has got a sexy design in collaboration with designer guy Vivanne Tam. The neat piece is quite fashionable in look. Not much details about specs have been disclosed by HP. But screen as you can see is much wider and keyboard much broader. Is Netbook a type of sub-notebook or just a fashion trend ? So there is finally one more thing you got to see in netbooks.
Toshiba to enter Netbook market soon
Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 | Laptop reviews | 1 Comment
Every one is jumping into the hot field and bandwagon of Netbooks. Netbooks, primarily notebooks designed for only simple processes and work is quite gearing up among geeks. Dell, Gateway, lenovo and Asus are already in the bandwagon. Someone which hasn’t much said about this is Toshiba. But, wait. Anonymous sources have said that Toshiba is already building its Netbook.
8.9 inch screen with 1020×600 resolution. Intel Atom 1.6 GHz processor. 4-cell battery and XP as OS. (Vista sucks the power). Not much information about how much HDD or SDD. Interestingly, few weeks back we got to hear that Intel Atom brand is dead. But for sure, Netbooks are going to create Atom as much noticed brand as Dual core.
Why I moved to a Mac Book
Tuesday, August 26th, 2008 | Laptop reviews | 1 Comment
I have a Black Mac Book I love it. This is my first Apple and so far I love this laptop I’m writing this post on it right now. I had a work laptop that my job provided it was a dell Latitude | D630 When I first got the dell I was so happy it seem really fast and it was for like 2 months then I got a virus so I had to reformat then I was fine for about a month and half then my hard drive died so I lost all my work again I was not happy. I was thinking about something my friend said (he has a Mac Book Pro) “Mac’s do not get virus” witch is not totally true but very close. I went to the Apple Store I had in mind I was going to buy the silver Mac Book Pro I walk in and saw the apple air and all most got that but it was slow for $1,800
Apple Air Specs:
- 13-inch: 1.6GHz
- Intel Core 2 Duo processor
- 2GB memory
- 80GB 4200-rpm PATA hard drive
- Built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi2 and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
- Weight 3.0 pounds
- $1,800
It does look nice but 1.6GHz for $1800 it was just to much for that. Then I saw the Black Mac Book I knew right then that was the one I wanted. I looked at the Mac Book Specs.
Black Mac Book Specs:
- 13-inch: Black 2.4GHz
- 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- 2GB memory
- 250GB hard drive
- Double-layer SuperDrive
- Weight 5.0 pounds
- $1,500
I walked out of the store at $1,400 something i talk them down $100 I think they said I was a student or something not sure but I did get a 100 dollars off that coved the taxes. I went home and started trying to find programs I had to be ready for work the next day and it was my new laptop for work and home. It was a little hard to move at move over from XP Pro to OS x but I’m glad I did. I have had this laptop for 2 months and no problems. The battery life is awesome I think I get 4 hours off of it. If you are looking for a new laptop I would say go Apple.
