  3. I got this COFE 1701 error which prevented me from accessing my email.
Called AOL Technical Support as this was happening on more than 1 computer. They talked me through my router settings (connect to your router using an IP address)
    and I went into:
    Advanced Settings
    Wan Setup
and then changed the MTU number to 1450.

This worked and all is OK now.

Not sure if this will work for you but worth a try.

    Comment by tasha — October 7, 2009 @ 4:26 am

  19. Same situation for me, here I am on hold (10 mins so far) waiting for AOL help (ha ha) to sort out this neverending problem. What on earth is going on? AOL / Talktalk customer service is very bad, not helped by the fact that the person I am speaking to clearly has no idea what he’s talking about.

    Comment by Claire — October 7, 2009 @ 4:27 am

  20. Forgot to say I’m in London, UK, in case that makes any difference…

    Comment by tasha — October 7, 2009 @ 4:30 am

  21. Obviously a widespread problem this morning !
AOL should put something on this site to reassure us they are trying to fix it and give us an expected timescale for this.

    Comment by andrew — October 7, 2009 @ 4:31 am

  22. yeah…and theres nothing on any news site or in forums about that

  29. It’s 10.30 am 7.10.09 I can’t access AOL webmail with Error Code: C0FE1701 showing…what’s up with this? You’d think AOL would at least put something on their homepage to let us know they are dealing with this widespread (it seems) problem. I am in the UK and have read here others even in Germany have the same problem. Good luck guys…I hope you are all back on (and me) soon!

  31. It’s 5:43AM on 7 Oct 2009 and I too am getting this C0FE1701 error code. Cannot access my AOL Webmail either. I got this error a long time ago and cannot remember how long it took to be able to access my email at that time. This is ridiculous. Whether its through Firefox or IE…I’m getting this error code. AOL should have had this problem fixed by now.

  37. Same here in Scotland, ,I am worried about the email addresses being pinched ,it was on the news last night and as I bank online I worry about phishing emails etc. Or is it that AOL (any other losers ) is overloaded with password changes as a result of the email address scare ?

  38. Same error message. But when occasionally able to access sign in page it then tells me “invalid username or password”

  42. I have been on hold for 35mins now! This is going to be the last straw, changing provider as their lack of professionalism is no longer acceptable, it takes a couple of seconds to put something on their website not the rubbish that is being constantly updated. We want to know why, when and what keeps causing it!

  61. I am currently out of my country and am using my email to monitor the health of a great friend. Due to the time change and fear of waking him should I call, this is an effective way to accomplish what I need. I am on the verge of breaking off my holiday if I am unable to communicate. 64. I too am in London and have just come off the phone to AOL tech support – they tell me it will take about another hour/hour and a half to put right. No explanation as to what exactly has gone wrong except that their email servers are ALL down. It’s now 1105 which means we’ve already lost at least 2 hours of worktime. Was told (insultingly I think) that if I had a business account then things would be different – in other words a residential account is regarded by AOL as a second-rate one. For goodness sake, do they think we are all morons?

They’re obviously working on the problem, and obviously have no idea as to when they will be able to fix it – the 1/1.5hours quoted above for repair time is wrong on their part… 2 hours + now and no access.

I appreciate Vik’s fix but need more details where is advanced search? When I went to advanced search at internet options it does now show Wan Set up.

Tried AOL Help from the home page but it did not connect.

Read on other sites to wait couple of hours but seems like it has been going on for a long time.

I hope if someone gets a fix they will post it here.

  124. I am also getting the COFE1701 as of this morning. I see some folks saying things like, “This is the third time this has happened…” I wish one of them would finish with “…it lasted a week” or a day, or whatever so we who are experiencing it for the first time might have some idea how long it will last. Thanks for anyone who reads this and can leave more specific information since, as we all seem to know, AOL is NO help at all.

  145. My apology for overreacting too negatively or being paranoid about it, but, could someone be up to something? Is there any reason that someone in a position to do so might want to temporarily stop an individual, or selected individuals, from accessing our email accounts? Affecting multiple users would camouflage the selection of targeted individuals. Do we all have something in common? Are we of any common political leanings/persuasions? Are there any of us someone might want to silence?…

Same thing with Verizon right now they can’t get an order straighten out for 6 weeks. It’s so sad. 210. If anyone from AOL is reading this: it would be a nice touch of customer service to post a notice on the main AOL page next time explaining you’re experiencing problems, to minimise panic and frustration at your clients’ end. Not getting access to your emails is annoying enough, but AOL’s total lack of info makes it 10 times worse…

    Comment by tasha — October 7, 2009 @ 7:39 am

  211. Well, I guess it’s slowly going back to normal. But it has been impressive to see how a few hours of email blackout have caused quite an international community to gather at this forum to exchange some news. It’s somewhat comforting to see that you are not alone with your problem… :-)

  235. Jerry Kelly: The problem must be from AOL, as far as I’m concerned it becomes available again from time to time, I’ve been able to access my account again for about half an hour so I thought the problem was solved, but now I’ve got the C0FE2305 error again… I don’t know what they are waiting for to fix this but it gets really irritating…

  236. I keep getting “an error ocurred while trying to retreive your messages, please try again” message. I have not been able to get my mail for 4 dasys now. What can I do? This is terrible.
