July 24, 2009
I got this COFE 1701 error which prevented me from accessing my email.
Called AOL Technical Support as this was happening on more than 1 computer. They talked me through my router settings (connect to your router using an IP address)
and I went into:
Advanced Settings
Wan Setup
and then changed the MTU number to 1450.
This worked and all is OK now.
Not sure if this will work for you but worth a try.

This Is soooooooooo annoying! im at uni and this is my main email contact. If uni is trying to email me, then they cant!
If the problem is not sorted soon then im seriously going to have to change server because i use my email all the time and have experienced nothing but problems with aol!
October 7, 2009
same error.called aol help waited 30 mins listning to cheezy music and hung up must be a few callers with and Error Code: C0FE1701 found this page seems like a am gonna have to wait fecken nightmare. If you have a spare few hours give aol a call

October 7, 2009
same problem here -.- i need my account too because changing to another server is to much work
October 7, 2009
Same problem. I guess I’m glad it’s not only me. Hopefully solution will be found SOON.
October 7, 2009
I am SO done with AOL. Ill use Gmail or Yahoo from now on. This is liek the 3rd time this has happened.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!
October 7, 2009
Also cannot log into my free AOL email account today
Can’t find a contact address on their site to report this problem to AOL, does anyone has their tech support email address?
October 7, 2009
Same situation for me, here I am on hold (10 mins so far) waiting for AOL help (ha ha) to sort out this neverending problem. What on earth is going on? AOL / Talktalk customer service is very bad, not helped by the fact that the person I am speaking to clearly has no idea what he’s talking about.
October 7, 2009
Forgot to say I’m in London, UK, in case that makes any difference…
October 7, 2009
Obviously a widespread problem this morning !
AOL should put something on this site to reassure us they are trying to fix it and give us an expected timescale for this.
October 7, 2009
yeah…and theres nothing on any news site or in forums about that
October 7, 2009
I’ve got the same problem! I’m in Germany, and here it also sucks! I need my account now.. Help and Troubleshooting and all that stuff doesn’t work -.-!
Was told 10 years ago that AOL was the worst of the worst..I didn’t believe him then…I do, now.

HELP…I NEED MY MAIL…AOL, ERROR cofe 1701….
WHAT do I DO…????
October 7, 2009
It’s 10.30 am 7.10.09 I can’t access AOL webmail with Error Code: C0FE1701 showing…what’s up with this? You’d think AOL would at least put something on their homepage to let us know they are dealing with this widespread (it seems) problem. I am in the UK and have read here others even in Germany have the same problem. Good luck guys…I hope you are all back on (and me) soon!
October 7, 2009
What is going on with this EMAIL, NO ACCESS to MAIL…???
FIX THIS PLEASE….HELP…..I need my mail…THANKS.
October 7, 2009
It’s 5:43AM on 7 Oct 2009 and I too am getting this C0FE1701 error code. Cannot access my AOL Webmail either. I got this error a long time ago and cannot remember how long it took to be able to access my email at that time. This is ridiculous. Whether its through Firefox or IE…I’m getting this error code. AOL should have had this problem fixed by now.
October 7, 2009
just logged on and found error code cofe1701 whats that all about
October 7, 2009
Same problem as all of you. Never had this problem before and can’t access from any computer I have tried. You think that they would post something on their website.
October 7, 2009
My MAIL.COM a/c I am locked-out of, but using the same portal and an address at CHEERFUL.COM is OK – don’t see how that can mean the router’s MTU shd be changed at all?
October 7, 2009
For some reason i cannot acces it from any of my networked computers here at work but using the same network i can download them all to my iPhone, tried to access the aol help pages but i get the HTTP 403 Forbidden message saying that the website declined to show the webpage. Am in the middle of a leagal claim and really need my mail account to send documents etc.
October 7, 2009
This is the FIRST time I’ve had any trouble at all with this service provider and I’m pleased to hear it’s not just me it’s happening to! Any info on tech support yet? Who / how do we contact?
Chin up guys – it’ll be fixed eventually
October 7, 2009
Same here in Scotland, ,I am worried about the email addresses being pinched ,it was on the news last night and as I bank online I worry about phishing emails etc. Or is it that AOL (any other losers ) is overloaded with password changes as a result of the email address scare ?
October 7, 2009
Same error message. But when occasionally able to access sign in page it then tells me “invalid username or password”
October 7, 2009
Thank goodness I am not the only one to have problems this morning with AOL. It’s like being shut out of your own house!!! So infuriating
Error code C0FE1701. London based
October 7, 2009
i ve got the same error
i m in France
October 7, 2009
Experiencing problems signing into account.
October 7, 2009
I have been on hold for 35mins now! This is going to be the last straw, changing provider as their lack of professionalism is no longer acceptable, it takes a couple of seconds to put something on their website not the rubbish that is being constantly updated. We want to know why, when and what keeps causing it!
October 7, 2009
@megan same here…first i tried to log in and then there was an error saying: incorrect password/username…next try i get the known error code
i cant get into my emails its come up code COFE1701 please get this fixed as we do pay for this service
October 7, 2009
hmmm…with mozilla thunderbird i can see my emails…
October 7, 2009
Same issue. Apple Mail and iPhone both give incorrect password errors, webmail gives C0FE1701. So annoying!
(UK account accessed from France)
October 7, 2009
Getting same error and locked out of home page with a HTTP403 error and cannot access the AOL HOME Page. Email was working at 9am Munich time. Then not.
October 7, 2009
Well I got it also COFE1701. Very frustrating. If they don’t fix it soon I will finally make the decision to take my email business elsewhere
October 7, 2009
Same problem. I am in Suffolk, UK.
October 7, 2009
Nearly eleven o’clock in London & I’m still getting this damn error code COFE1701; what on earth is this all about?
October 7, 2009

October 7, 2009
Same Problem… Frustrating.
October 7, 2009

i hve been recv’ing aol err code C0FE1701 off and on for over 1 month now, on both my aol accts…. cannot access mail… real problem. what gives?
October 7, 2009
C0FE1701 Error code AOL . AOL people, fix it now please.
Zum Heulen, nichts geht bei Aol mail.
Hilfe? Fehlanzeige
Werde anderes email Konto anlegen.
Bin in Deutschland
I am in Southern France and am getting the COFE1701 error message also. As this seems to be a major problem, why on earth does AOL not post a message with an explanation etc? Easily done and a service that should be expected for a server of that size….Absolutely unacceptable.
October 7, 2009
C0FE1701
Same prop happened today 07/10/09
October 7, 2009
Have hung up after 48mins as I do not think they are going to answer like last time, a large proportion of us use this service for business use but that does not appear to mean absolutely anything to them.
I am currently out of my country and am using my email to monitor the health of a great friend. Due to the time change and fear of waking him should I call, this is an effective way to accomplish what I need. I am on the verge of breaking off my holiday if I am unable to communicate. Very upset.
October 7, 2009
6 a.m. in U.S. and same problem.
October 7, 2009
Same here- sooooo frustrating as I need me email now
October 7, 2009
I too am in London and have just come off the phone to AOL tech support – they tell me it will take about another hour/hour and a half to put right. No explanation as to what exactly has gone wrong except that their email servers are ALL down. It’s now 1105 which means we’ve already lost at least 2 hours of worktime. Was told (insultingly I think) that if I had a business account then things would be different – in other words a residential account is regarded by AOL as a second-rate one. For goodness sake, do they think we are all morons?
October 7, 2009
Same problem here in Paris at 12 noon.
October 7, 2009
Same here….more than annoying
October 7, 2009
Am having the same issue–when I try to check email I get the code C0FE1701
I can’t get to my email. Getting the same error message referred to in earlier posts. My son is trying to complete college apps and needs email to communicate to colleges. What is going on? I do pay for this service each month. Does someone have an ETA on when AOL email will be fixed?
October 7, 2009
has anyone got the number for aol?? got error code C0FE1701 and its driving me mad!! HELP
October 7, 2009
Same problem. I appreciate Vik’s fix but I need more details. Where is Advanced Setting. When I used the internet advanced setting, it did not show Wan Setup as an option.
Also read on another site that AOL has a help section but have not checked it yet.
I hope more people post fixes.
Thanks
October 7, 2009
I’m in France, it’s noon and I have exactly the same problem since around 10:30 am ( I could access to my e-mail earlier this morning ). I’m relieved to see I’m not the only one it’s happening to, but it’s very annoying, I hope they’ll fix it soon.
I’ve the same problem… iam in Germany i purchased with PaySafe and maybe i did waste my money now -.- PLS FIX IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AOL, please post a message on your home page about this issue. I think it would mean a world of good for customer relations.
October 7, 2009
Thanks for posting Claire – at least if we know it’s only going to be 60-90 minutes there is hope!
cofe error 1701 apeared this AM. Attempted to use 3 different computers with no favorable results
October 7, 2009
Save your money and stop calling them NOW!!
They’re obviously working on the problem, and obviously have no idea as to when they will be able to fix it – the 1/1.5hours quoted above for repair time is wrong on their part… 2 hours + now and no access.
October 7, 2009
Same fpr me here in Germany – no chance neither laptop nor iphone… alle sam .. error code 1701
Same problem here in Leeds COFE1701
October 7, 2009
i got the same error code. this is the first time in many years i have had trouble with aol email.
October 7, 2009
@Aimee…Ah dear…ring your friend hun…he will not mind…he would hate to think of you worrying like this.
@Claire…thank you for the update you have managed to get from AOL tech support…lets hope it’s back in a couple of hours.
C.x
October 7, 2009
Thanks for the update Claire, so if what they told you is right, we should have access again at 12pm UK time, right? Fingers crossed… Looks like this is a worldwide problem by the looks of it…
BTW I hasn’t aware AOL did a “Business Account”, what’s that and how does one get one?
October 7, 2009
i am in Germany the same problem
Another fine mess AOL has us in;why don’t you people give up. Is there anything you thouch that does’nt end up in a mess.
Maybe you should stop sending the problems out of the country
October 7, 2009
the same thing for me who is in France
PS. This seems to be widespread
October 7, 2009
same here in DC at 0616 on Wed, 10-10-09
October 7, 2009

October 7, 2009
Same here 11.15 in sunderland and cant get on the damn thing!!
Mind you 1st time it ever happened to me though but even still, very annoying
October 7, 2009
Thanks Claire, and all others who have been able to contact AOL.
October 7, 2009
@ jonas, do you have to download it? Do you have the link
October 7, 2009
6:15 am. I’m having the same problem with webmail. I still had the old AOL software on my computer and was able to log on and check mail using that.
C0FE1701: why is this error happening, i trashed my coockies and temp fiels as well and restarted the computer several time still the same error, why is this happening………! never expected this from AOl……!
October 7, 2009
Maybe, AOL would like to make an URGENT statment!
October 7, 2009
Same problem for me. Considering the hacking/email security story in the news, being unable to access the account this morning is especially worrying. AOHell as usual providing no information. >(
October 7, 2009
Hello from Germany,
they are probably trying to fix the hacker-problem and messed it more up. I guess you all heard that hackers have posted email adresses and passwords on the internet from Google, Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL accounts.
Greets,
Jana
October 7, 2009
India call centre just told me it could be 24 hours
October 7, 2009
@Kaylz just google for mozilla thunderbird…
@janaina war auch mein erster gedanke

October 7, 2009
Getting the same also, am in Germany but appears to be more then a local issue. When you look at the message it says you are hitting the system but are being blocked. Was able to access mail earlier but not now, will see when I get home from work tonight
October 7, 2009
I tried to post here but hasn’t shown up yet.
I appreciate Vik’s fix but need more details where is advanced search? When I went to advanced search at internet options it does now show Wan Set up.
Tried AOL Help from the home page but it did not connect.
Read on other sites to wait couple of hours but seems like it has been going on for a long time.
I hope if someone gets a fix they will post it here.
Would be nice if it is world wide problem – AOL would post it on their web page with fix or updates.
October 7, 2009
same thing C0FE1701 for no reason. I too use this account for business and personal. This is ridiculous. Will switch to another server soon.
October 7, 2009
Urgently need my E-Mail access have Error Code COFE1701
What to I do next ? Please fix ASAP .
Thanks to everyone on this forum who has posted so I now know that this is a world wide problem. Special thanks to the person who got through to the Tech help as I have been trying all morning. I too am in London and need the email for work. Very frustrating !!!
Here in NYC, same problem plus I cannot even get onto AOL’s website. I keep getting this message:
Forbidden
You don’t have permission to access /_cqr/login on this server.
I’ve had it with AOL. I’ve already signed up for gmail.
October 7, 2009
whats the server on thunderbird? I havent got a clue with it lol
I thinks this is happening everywhere? I can’t access my email using aol.co.uk but can when using the aol vr software!
Also screen names and parental controls seem to up the creek. I reckon this could have something to do with this password hack thing??
October 7, 2009
It is 12:30PM in Rome, Italy, and the problem persists.
October 7, 2009
@kaylz
my server settings (extras–>accounts)

October 7, 2009
Anyone got a solution?
@jonas
You can check your mails from http://www.mail.com with Thunderbird?
Whats the POP-Server? Cause I cant :/
THREE HOURS AND NO MAIL
AOLSUCKS.COM WORKS BETTER
AOL,,GO AWAY..I WISH SOMEBODY WOULD BUY AOL AND FIX THIS JUNK SERVER. THINK STEVE JOBS WOULD GIVE $20 FOR AOL??
This is so fustrating. I’ve been at it over an hour, I have a huge party being planned and commuincations are all on aol. What a let down I’ve had this email account for well over 11 years and hate the thought of switching to a new provider.
I am also getting the COFE1701 as of this morning. I see some folks saying things like, “This is the third time this has happened…” I wish one of them would finish with “…it lasted a week” or a day, or whatever so we who are experiencing it for the first time might have some idea how long it will last. Thanks for anyone who reads this and can leave more specific information since, as we all seem to know, AOL is NO help at all.
October 7, 2009
Have just gained access to email account!

Access has been fine till this morning. 9 october.
October 7, 2009
My apology for overreacting too negatively or being paranoid about it, but, could someone be up to something? Is there any reason that someone in a position to do so might want to temporarily stop an individual, or selected individuals, from accessing our email accounts? Affecting multiple users would camouflage the selection of targeted individuals. Do we all have something in common? Are we of any common political leanings/persuasions? Are there any of us someone might want to silence?…
October 7, 2009
Email is back on in London
Hopefully all you guys will have access to yours very shortly too…
October 7, 2009
crap, I had my mail back for 5 minutes, now it’s gone again…

Trust it will be repaired shortly.

” Northampton, England – no email here – I get a different error message HTTP 403 The website declined to show this webpage!”
I was getting that as well. It’s all over the place!!
C0FE1701 strikes again any news
October 7, 2009

No point ringing customer srvices…”My name is rapesh and I will endevour to resolve your problem today” Bol***s!
October 7, 2009
What’s the point of saying the same thing as everyone? I can’t access my emails either, same error number as everyone else, I really wonder what AOL’s developpers are paid for…..it’s been going on for more than one year and still no solution? Aren’t AOL supposed to be one of the most powerful trust in this world..?
Real shame to have so many unsatisfied customers, don’t you think?
It might be time for action…
for what it’s worth…i have three free aol accounts…i am now able to access one of them, but keep getting the COFE1701 message for the other two…
will the frustrating mysteries of aol never end?
new york city
October 7, 2009
Down in Western NY….
October 7, 2009
Same thing this is one of my business accounts but I hear AOL has a lot of trouble. Can’t talk to a person in this world anymore, all computerized krapp. Well we see how many days this takes. Same thing with Verizon right now they can’t get an order straighten out for 6 weeks. It’s so sad. But what can you do, so bigger the company so more they have the freedom to do what ever they want and if they go down well we can give them some money.Something wrong with this picture.
i wonder if Oprah’s having this problem? Oprah, you there…?

Thanks Jonas – but where I am looking to find ‘Extras’? May as well set Thunderbird up now even though yours has blinked – may be useful in the future!

Back on for 2nd time London
ah ha…now we know…GORDON’S BEHIND THIS MESS…lol
AOL basically needs a good boot up the backside and needs to go back to focussing on it’s paying customers.
Having been with aol for 12 years I have seen a massive decline in their service over the past year or two. Come on AOL, I know your watching…so sort it out!
October 7, 2009
NOW we know what the problem is – Gordon Brown has touched it!

October 7, 2009
Tried Thunderbird as suggested above but it times out before it can get the e-mails. Not sure if I set it up right. I did put aol as the server. Everything seemed to download fine. Perhaps they are having trouble with aol too.
AOL should put updates on their homepage but in all my years with AOL they seem so scared to admit a problem let alone keep anyone informed.
October 7, 2009

Annoying.
October 7, 2009

October 7, 2009
WooHOo…Back on in Southern Scotland…good luck guys.
October 7, 2009
If anyone from AOL is reading this: it would be a nice touch of customer service to post a notice on the main AOL page next time explaining you’re experiencing problems, to minimise panic and frustration at your clients’ end. Not getting access to your emails is annoying enough, but AOL’s total lack of info makes it 10 times worse…
October 7, 2009
Well, I guess it’s slowly going back to normal. But it has been impressive to see how a few hours of email blackout have caused quite an international community to gather at this forum to exchange some news. It’s somewhat comforting to see that you are not alone with your problem… ![]()
Cheers and good luck with your mails !!!
October 7, 2009

May 7, 2010
Same here, it worked perfectly this morning but now I can’t access my e-mail account, I keep getting the C0FE2305 error code.
I tried to access my account via 3 different versions of the webmail ( aol.fr, aol.uk and aol.de ) but neither would let me access my mail, I got the same error code each time.
May 7, 2010
I am getting a different error code it’s giving me Error Code: C0FE2305 Report ID: 30483-webmail-20100507-113540. Can you tell me what this means and when it might be fixed? I’ve had this email acct for years and I do a lot of important business sending and recieving of emails through this acct. I hope it’s fixed ASAP!!! Thanks….
May 7, 2010
If you go to the aol.ca Canada site, you will at least see who is emailing you and you can respond via other email service. This stinks, though, I feel your pain everyone.
May 7, 2010
I tried aol.ca, but I didn’t work, I get the exact same message
However I have noticed it seems to come back from time to time, I was able to access my mail about 10 mn ago… But now I get the error code again, I hope this will be fixed soon, it gets really annoying.
NYC here same error:
Error Code: C0FE2305 Report ID: 10423-webmail-20100507-120917
GRRRRR!
May 7, 2010
I’m getting the same stupid code – so the servers must be down. Like the DOW yesterday, let’s hope they come back up!!
Getting error code COFE 2305. Is the problem mine or aol?
May 7, 2010
I am getting error code cofe2305 when I try to get into my aol mail. What’s wrong?
May 7, 2010
Jerry Kelly: The problem must be from AOL, as far as I’m concerned it becomes available again from time to time, I’ve been able to access my account again for about half an hour so I thought the problem was solved, but now I’ve got the C0FE2305 error again… I don’t know what they are waiting for to fix this but it gets really irritating…
I keep getting “an error ocurred while trying to retreive your messages, please try again” message. I have not been able to get my mail for 4 dasys now. What can I do? This is terrible.
